Power companies across North America are transitioning to more renewable fuel sources, and they require new digital technologies, software, and services to help them drive operational excellence across the enterprise. Emerson and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas (MHPS) have joined forces to meet this need with digital transformation solutions that enable better operational performance for utilities and provide cleaner and more renewable fuel sources for consumers.

I recently spoke with Emerson’s Brett Benson about how this new partnership will help drive innovation in the power industry to enhance the performance and reliability of power plants operating with MHPS gas or steam turbines:

Next-generation plants will need simulation technologies that seamlessly receive data and operate in parallel with the plant’s integrated control systems and enterprise platforms to support testing, commissioning, and training.

Utility providers—such as the Intermountain Power Plant (IPP) in Delta, Utah—are leveraging the collaboration to transition to more renewable sources such as hydrogen fuel. These utility-scale plants that enable carbon-free generation rely on digital solutions to optimize performance and reliability, enable predictive and AI-driven maintenance strategies, and automate operational decision-making.

Working together, Emerson and MHPS bring even more value to power generation organizations, with increased options for operations and maintenance optimization, performance improvement, and flexible operation. Combining Emerson’s digital twin technology with MHPS’s high-fidelity gas turbine and steam turbine models and analytics will allow utilities to test, train, and advance processes to make all operations their best operations.

Emerson’s Ovation distributed control system is already designed with simulation in mind, with an embedded digital twin enabling plants to identify and implement new operating efficiencies, improve safety, decrease unscheduled maintenance, and train workers.

Collaboration with MHPS will meet these needs, leveraging Emerson’s Ovation™ automation technologies, software, and solutions portfolio for power generation to digitally transform the way the IPP and other projects are designed and executed. The strategy builds on Ovation’s proven history of success and current installations in thousands of plants across the globe.

Digital transformation technologies and solutions are providing power generation organizations better automated workflows, decision support, and workforce upskilling. Emerson’s collaboration with MHPS focuses on these core competencies of digital transformation, helping utility plants of the future continually find new ways to maximize profitability while combating climate change with cleaner, more affordable electricity.
