Emerson's Ana Gonzalez Hernandez

The 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24) was held in Katowice, Poland, December 2-14. For many years, manufacturers have been on a path to drive more sustainable operations in reducing emissions and energy usage. As automation technology advances, it plays an increasing role as a strategic lever in these sustainability and performance improvement initiatives.

Emerson’s Ana Gonzalez Hernandez, whom you may recall from earlier resource efficiency-related posts, attended the conference. Ana shared her thoughts in a video interview with ENERGETYKA24 TV.

In this 1:33 video, she describes how manufacturers can go beyond traditional energy efficiency improvement initiatives to analyze both energy and materials usage. When analyzed together, there is a much greater opportunity for increased resource efficiency and reduced emissions.

Adding measurements enabled by Industry 4.0 technologies with new methodologies to measure the integrated resource efficiency of production processes enables more proactive operations. This means that asset failures can be predicted before they occur, and inefficiencies identified and resolved before they lead to increased energy, material consumption, and emissions.

Ana explained how this methodology has been put into practice at several sites and is being refined for wider use. Taking this fresh approach to analyze both energy and materials usage is opening a path to greater resource efficiency and more sustainable manufacturing.
