Setting Up and Calibrating Valve Positioners

Short videos are great ways to show how to perform an activity, such as calibrating a valve’s actuator to move the valve stem based on the 4-20mA signal it receives from the control system.

In this under 5-minute “how-to” video, Emerson’s Alex Quah Shu Min demonstrates the setup and calibration procedure for the Fisher 3582i electro-pneumatic, single-acting positioner on a Fisher 667 Size 30 reverse-acting actuator.

He opens describing the role of the 3582i positioner, which accepts a 4-20mA signal and positions the valve accordingly.

Alex shows the tools required to perform the setup and calibration including two wrenches, a Phillips head screwdriver and GE Rosemount 282 loop validator to generate a 4-20 signal. He then shows how to make sure the cam is correctly mounted with the arrow correctly in the right position. The instruction manual shows how to change the cam position if needed.

He shows the rest of the steps including making sure that the feedback arm on the positioner is mounted correctly before performing the calibration by moving the actuator between the fully closed and fully opened positions.

Under 5 minutes of time invested in watching can save reading many, many pages and trying to interpret the words into actions. We hope videos such as these help you and your control and instrumentation teams more effectively and efficiently perform these operations.
