Over the past several years, the Middle East has been a growing source for new process manufacturing facilities such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and petrochemical complexes. Emerson has increasingly been involved in providing technologies and expertise for these projects.
I just saw a news item of the opening of a new Emerson facility in Dubai. A large cross-section of Emerson businesses are now located at this facility. From the release:
Emerson businesses with a presence at the new facility include: Emerson Process Management, Emerson Network Power, Emerson Industrial Automation, Emerson Professional Tools, Emerson Climate Technologies, and Emerson Storage Solutions.
Being the curious sort, I sent off a note to a friend I’ve known for many years, David Walker. David is a technical sales manager specializing in the DeltaV and DeltaV SIS systems. I asked him how it was to have so many of the Emerson businesses outside our Process Management group all together.
David shared with me how the very large projects they are executing require products and technologies from many of the businesses. He cited a few examples such as Network Power providing control room furniture, uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), and power conditioning equipment for on-site and remote buildings. From the Industrial Automation business, David mentioned variable speed drives, solenoid islands, and solenoid valves used in safety shutdown valves.
Even the building’s Scroll compressors at the heart of the large air conditioning units that are sized handle the Dubai summer heat are from the Climate business.
Now knowing all the sharp-eyed folks who read this blog, I’ll likely get emails for all the other things I didn’t mention that are used in projects and in the building itself like motors, closet organizers, thermostats, and even the sink disposer units. That should hopefully head off a few.
The news also described:
…50,000 square feet of light industrial manufacturing and warehouse space…
David noted how this area is used to stage the large projects for project engineering and final acceptance before it ships to the process manufacturer’s site for commissioning. Having colleagues across the various businesses together in one facility helps in the communication and project management of these large, complex projects.
It sounds like I need to put my head together with David’s to figure out how I can wrangle a visit over there to see the new accommodations and the growing level of experts executing large projects. It could be a very interesting visit!
