A recent U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report anticipates strong growth in wind energy deployments. I’m enthusiastic about the continued growth of renewables in general, and wind energy, in particular.
Emerson has been supporting major utilities in the power sector for over 100 years. As power producers increasingly move into the renewable space, we are moving with them in nearly every space –hydropower, solar, battery storage, hydrogen and wind power.
Are you surprised to find Emerson involved in wind power? If so, I invite you to check out my interview with Wind Systems, where I described Emerson’s new capabilities and innovations for wind and other renewables.
The interview covers a lot of ground, but here are a few highlights.
- Expanded solutions for wind: Although Emerson has been involved in the renewables space for quite some time, our recent acquisition of Mita-Teknik, a leader in wind turbine controls, has translated into broader and deeper solutions for wind energy. For instance, by providing greater access to data, Emerson is able to help utilities optimize their renewables operations.
- Turbine retrofits: The turbine controller is the brains behind the turbine, and we provide both OEM solutions and turbine retrofit solutions that are independent from the equipment OEMs. With our solutions, our customers gain access to data that was not previously available to them. And this data brings valuable insight into performance that can translate into additional energy production and therefore, additional revenue.
- Ovation™ Green: I’m really excited about our new Ovation Green portfolio. It is based on our proven power industry history and expertise, but purpose-built to optimize renewable energy asset operations. Our customers typically manage a mix of diverse assets and they appreciate how having a common platform that bridges traditional and renewable power sources can reduce complexity.
- New technologies: We are developing new software for wind customers. To date, most of our development has been in the areas of energy management and asset management. This is well-received by our customers, who are looking for more integrated controls between asset types.
