Emerson’s Sean Saul and Sesh Natarajan provided a roadmap for the DeltaV distributed control system at the 2023 Emerson Exchange Immerse conference. Sean opened by describing the Boundless Automation vision driving change in the automation architecture. The architecture flattens and includes the cloud, edge control, instrumentation, and final control at the base.
Key pillars of the roadmap are seamless data & I/O connectivity, modular & flexible architecture, insight-centric application & operator experience, and secure by design. In DeltaV version 15, feature pack 1 (FP1) seamless data connectivity is enhanced with the native PROFINET on the PK and PK Flex controllers. The Advanced Physical Layer (APL) is also supported on these controllers. Edge control is available in this FP1.
Sesh came to the podium to discuss the PROFINET addition. Now, native integration of PROFINET, Modbus TCP, OPC UA, and Ethernet/IP is available on all DeltaV PK controllers. Module Type Package (MTP)-based integration decreases cost and complexity in integrating OEM skids. From a data and I/O connectivity perspective, IO.Connect enables exiting I/O to be kept in place. PLC migration is simplified with DeltaV support for Series 2 high-density cards with Zone 2 I/O.
The DeltaV PK Flex Controller is scalable on demand with simple engineering. It is software scalable to adjust control capacity as needed with flexible subscription licensing. Hyperconverged infrastructure-based virtualization provides easy, scalable virtualization with improved performance. Performance is improved by 20% over prior versions.
From a batch control and analytics perspective, DeltaV Spectral PAT in a simplified closed-loop architecture. DeltaV Live is faster and more robust with continued enhancements and integration with web applications.
The DeltaV Edge Environment provides secure IT/OT collaboration to power enterprise operational performance. It includes out-of-the-box contextualization, an on-demand DeltaV replica into the IT environment, and simplified deployment of applications. These capabilities reduce infrastructure, data management, and maintenance costs.
Sean returned to share some future capabilities, which I’ll save for future posts.
