Introducing the new Micro Motion 4200 2-Wire Transmitter

best-2-wire-transmitterChemical plants and refineries around the globe are dealing with unreliable legacy 2-wire flow points and are looking for the upgrade migration path to a more accurate and reliable measurement. Traditionally, Coriolis meters have not been thought of as part of the 2-wire upgrade revolution as the option didn’t exist.

With the release of the new Micro Motion 4200 2-wire Coriolis transmitter Emerson now makes the upgrade migration to Coriolis possible. The 2-wire Coriolis transmitter improves reliability by providing a repeatably accurate mass flow and density measurement, optimizes production, ensures safety by producing accurate fills resulting in less exposure and spill hazards from overfilling, and eliminates cost by reducing engineering and planning time.

Retrofit Transmitter Challenges

The challenges for most chemical and refinery operations of retrofitting existing 2-wire flow points include upgrading without installing additional wire, plant expansions where power is not centrally located, and the need to install back up power on critical flow point devices. The 2-wire Coriolis transmitter eliminates cost by using the existing wiring and without the need to run additional wiring, scaffolding, conduit, AC panels, and transformers. With this solution, the complexity, length of time, and cost for the project is reduced significantly.

In many cases it becomes a matter of swapping out the existing – legacy – meter for a the 4200 2-wire Coriolis transmitter.

Flow Meter Diagnostics

The Micro Motion 2-wire Coriolis transmitter provides a reliable, accurate mass flow and density measurement along with standard meter health diagnostics, such as Smart Meter Verification, to provide confidence in the meter performance. The transmitter also provides a data historian with real-time clock to help you make sense of meter health reports, process data, and includes a complete audit trail.

Audit trails that can be used to meet compliance requirements and compile statistical data on meter operations and plot your flow over time.

Benefits of Upgrading to a 2-Wire Transmitter

Some of the benefits of upgrading to the 4200 2-wire Coriolis transmitter that can be realized is the elimination or reduction of costs for detailed engineering, installation labor, wiring, conduit, AC panels, transformers and planning since the Micro Motion 2-wire Coriolis transmitter shares power and signal over the same pair of wires and can easily accommodate retrofitting legacy 2-wire flow points and in plant expansions where power is not centrally located.

Capex Estimate

Below we’ve broken out a hypothetical plant upgrade with CAPEX estimate.

Most of the savings when selecting 2-wire Coriolis transmitter will be in the design package for the project. Let’s breakdown the numbers for a simple installation with AC power within 150’ of a new meter:

  • Design at $100 per hour assuming billing for 1 week for drawings, material list, IFC package = $4,000
  • Existing AC power panel with conduit run/material and labor= $6,000
  • If you have scaffolds 20′ or below= $4,000 ea. Above 20′ = $7,000 ea.
    • Total estimated savings at: $17,000

Let’s run the numbers on an AC Power Panel 500’ away:

  • Design and scaffold stay the same.
  • Conduit run/material/labor goes to around $18,000
  • New AC Power Panel:
  • Design around 4 weeks for complete construction package= $16,000
  • Transformer=$2,500
  • 36 breaker power panel=$4,600
  • Conduit run from a substation to new panel location depending on distance=$5,000 per 100’
  • Assuming 200’ = $10,000
    • Total estimated savings at: $51,100
