Keep On Top of Regulations with Smart Meter Verification

When it comes to regulations in the process industries related to health, safety, the environment and operations, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’re up against something of a moving target.

From food & beverages and the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to the American Petroleum Institute (API), the Instrument Society of America and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and the Environment Protection Agency (EPA), there is an ever-growing list of guidelines and requirements for process instrumentation.

The need to adhere to these regulations while maintaining efficient processes is a major headache for process operators and compliance managers today, as they continually have to verify flow meters that are often already working perfectly. In many cases, they are faced with no other option than having to pull the meters and transport them to laboratory facilities at considerable cost, risk and downtime.

The end result is process interruptions, damage to equipment and unnecessary calibrations. There’s a reason why market analysts Technavio are forecasting that the global flowmeter calibration market will grow by over 6% per year between now and 2022!

That’s why the new advanced Emerson Smart Meter Verification (SMV) system and the in-situ verification of meters, introduced at our webinar last week, represents such a revolution in metering compliance requirements.

Rather than the upheavals of cumbersome calibrations and laboratory trips, process and meter compliance managers can ensure – through Smart Meter Verification’s diagnostics and report – that their meters meet the necessary regulations and deliver the specific data required there and then. Measurement costs can be cut in half or more.

Industry regulators are seeing Smart Meter Verification as the way forward as well. Agencies, such as the EPA and the American Gas Association (AGA) and ISO/EIC have already acknowledged Smart Meter Verification and its clear and transparent audit trails’ ability to extend prove-test and recalibration intervals.

The ultimate goal of process plant operators today is securing that perfect balance between increased output, reduced costs and meeting ever changing compliance requirements. With Smart Meter Verification covering compliance, you can focus on what matters most – delivering operational improvements across your plant.
