Petroineos a joint venture between PetroChina and Ineos has operated the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland since 2011. The day is here when a company does not need to own their software, the infrastructure to run it, nor hire the people to operate and maintain it. With corporate desktops shifting to Microsoft’s cloud-based Office365, Software-as-a-Service, or SaaS, is starting to gain acceptance from mainstream manufacturers. A US DOE grant is funding an open, cloud-based Smart Manufacturing platform which will host a marketplace for software vendors to provide SaaS to small and medium sized enterprises.
